Australia's second-busiest airport is getting a brand new terminal, replacing the satellite structure currently in place.
Construction on Melbourne Airport's Terminal 4 upgrade project will soon get underway, to hit a 2014 target completion date.
The current Terminal 4 stands separately from the airport's other structures and is used by Tiger Airways Australia. This carrier - along with Jetstar Airways - will occupy the replacement terminal, after some aircraft parking stands and freight services have been relocated.
The new terminal will be linked to Melbourne Airport's Terminal 3, ultimately making it easier to carry out upgrades to this terminal at a future point in time. In connection with the airport's Terminal 4 build programme, other new infrastructure elements will also be added. These include revised baggage-handling facilities, additional aircraft parking gates, expanded access roads and a multi-storey car park.
The Melbourne Terminal 4 project's total cost is an estimated $300 million.
